If you provide services to those in crisis, you may be at risk of experiencing compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. “Vicarious traumatization”, also known as secondary traumatization, is the emotional residue or strain of working with those suffering from the consequences of traumatic events (Figley, 1995). It can occur due to exposure on one case or can be due to a “cumulative” level of trauma.

This training will discuss the phenomenon of vicarious trauma and help participants explore options to address these issues. This training will also explore self-care techniques and strategies professionals can use to help ensure balance. You will learn how to recognize the symptoms of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, develop resilience and healthy coping skills, and create a professional and personal care plan to minimize the risk of compassion fatigue in your work.

Topics to be covered include:

What is vicarious (secondary) trauma, and who is affected by it?

What can I do to better manage work; family; stress; life?

How can I implement self-care into my daily life?

Speaker: Vicki Ley, MA, LMHC, LCAC

This training qualifies for 3 CEUs in the Behavioral Health and Human Services (BHHS) field.
