American Red Cross Marshall County Asks "Who Is A Hero?"

Who is a hero? The textbook definition of a hero is, “a person revered especially for noble courage.” To one person, it's a baseball player; to another, it might be an astronaut. Most of us can agree that a hero has, in some way, to someone, distinguished himself or herself through an act or accomplishment out of the ordinary.

On April 21, 2003, the Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross will kick off the Heroes Campaign. The campaign is designed to rally our community (Marshall County) into the spirit of giving through the creation of Heroes. These Heroes are people who volunteer to personally contribute or pledge to raise $1000 toward the campaign goal of $25,000. Corporate sponsors will also be recognized through advertisement in the local media for their help in providing materials and services for the campaign.

These are hard times for many and the number of people in need far outpaces the available funds allocated to our chapter. Our chapter is not just about bloodmobiles. It provides food to the hungry, clothing, shelter, heaters in the winter and fans in the summer, CPR training, lifeguard training, armed forces emergency notification services and disaster preparedness education just to name a few. Over 400 volunteers and 3 salary staff members provide all of these services.

These uncertain economic times also makes it very challenging to ask people for donations. The Heroes Campaign focuses on having many people contributing a little instead of a few contributing a lot. Friendly competition, pride in accomplishment, a way to support those in need in our community; that's how the Heroes campaign transcends just giving a donation.

A kick-off breakfast will be held Tuesday, April 21, from 8:00 a.m.-8:30 a.m. at the Plymouth First United Methodist Church. Coffee and doughnuts will be served after a short presentation by the Heroes chairman, Dan Marohn.

The campaign will last for three weeks, culminating with a Heroes Celebration luncheon to be held from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. at Christo's Banquet Center. All of the Heroes will be recognized with a souvenir of appreciation.

If you would like to participate through a corporate sponsorship or would like to serve on the Heroes committee or volunteer to be a Hero, please contact Dan Marohn, Heroes chairman, at 936-3741 or Harriet Wilson, executive director, at 936-3928.

Be a hero to someone - support the Marshall County chapter of the American Red Cross.
