NAIA The National Association of Intercollegiate Atheletics From the desk of:Pat Bayley Tournament Director 574-936-9798 As many of you know The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has awarded Plymouth and Swan Lake Resort the 2007-2008 National Men's Golf Championships. This is a great compliment to our community as the selection committee was very impressed with the community's enthusiasm for hosting this national event. Swan Lake Resort is very proud to host this event and very proud to be a part of this community. The NAIA tournament will host 28 teams from all over the country. These teams will converge on the Plymouth area during this year's event from May 20-25. Four tournament rounds will be played on the Indiana National Golf Club's East Course. During this week we will have the opportunity to showcase our community and its hometown warmth. A national event is a huge undertaking. With the support of the local businesses and community leaders the NAIA tournament will put Plymouth on a national stage. Many companies and individuals have stepped forward to help this event become a reality and we thank them. We, however, are still looking for some help. In the next few days and weeks we will need a few more sponsorships and many volunteers, to make this a first class event. If your company would like to partner in this endeavor or you would like to volunteer, please feel free to contact the chamber office or call me at Swan Lake (936-9798). Together we will all make this event "Plymouth Proud." RE: NAIA LETTER OF ENDORSEMENT To pull this event together and to give our community the maximum exposure to the hundreds of expected NAIA visitors, this letter of endorsement (see page 2) is being shown to our Chamber members here first. The Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce Public Relations / Tourism Committee, made up of several Chamber member businesses, is partnering with Swan Lake, The Pilot News, and the Marshall County Convention & Visitors Bureau to help facilitate this community effort. This letter will accompany the Pilot News sales staff when they start offering the extensive advertising package that will target these visitors. Those businesses taking advantage of this opportunity will have "the ears, the eyes, the taste buds and the consumer dollars" as these visitors look for things to do and places to see around our community in between tournaments. National media, such as the golf channel and USA Today will be covering this event which will give our community tremendous national exposure. The PR/Tourism Committee is developing many other ways for our Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce members to participate in this event. Sunday, May 20th the teams will be arriving at Swan Lake to register for the tournament. We want to put together community information packets (goody bags), both for this initial registration and, starting Monday, set up a Chamber information booth manned by our Chamber member "Ambassadors of Good Will" to not only hand out these packets to both teams and visitors, but to also "greet, meet and guide" these visitors to our community's "places to go and things to see." Help will be needed to stuff these bags. We are looking at two / four hour shifts a day, with at least two members per shift to host the information booth. "Welcome NAIA" window signs and table tents are being created and distribution help will be needed. This is an exclusive invitation to our Chamber members to participate, to show off our community and to have your own business recognized. Please call the Chamber office (936-2323) to let us know how you would like to participate. ![]() Chamber Annual Nominations The date to turn in nominations for Distinguished Citizen, Volunteer, Youth Service and Public Servant has been extended to April 16, 2007. Union Rd., Donaldson, 574-936-8898 www.ancilla.edu Edward Barcenas, a transfer from University of Indianapolis and a graduate of Merrillville High School, signed a letter of intent with the Ancilla College men's soccer team, making him the fourth player to join the Chargers for fall 2007. Barcenas, a striker who played two years of varsity under Pirates coach Brian Past, will add an extra dimension of creativity to the Chargers attack. He currently plays club soccer for Hammond-based GS Alliance, where he competes in the highly competitive, Chicago-based C.L.A.S.A. league. Since he did not play at the University of Indianapolis, he will still have two years of eligibility remaining to play with the Chargers. "Edward is a player who is going to turn some heads with his abilities," said Ancilla head coach James Drzewiecki. "His track record in the classroom is outstanding, and his creativity on the field is very, very good. We've had the chance to watch him in a couple scenarios - both in the C.L.A.S.A. league and at our latest showcase - and he proved in both settings he is a high-caliber striker. Our fans are going to find him very exciting to watch." Ancilla College is a Catholic, two-year, co-educational, liberal arts college in Donaldson, Indiana sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. New Members
