Growth Continues...
The value of building permit applications for the first six months of 1998 exceeded 11.5 million dollars in Plymouth and the two mile area around the city. Leading the way was one and two family dwellings accounting for 33 permits and about 4.5 million dollars worth of new construction. Business, Commercial and Public permits were valued at 3.7 million dollars for 21 projects. The year to date totals of 11.5 million is the second largest dollar value recorded since 1988. (Chart A)

Table One provides a detailed breakdown of categories, numbers of permits and dollar values for both the City and the two mile area. The two mile zone is the responsibility of the City Building Commissioner. Clearly, the new construction investment in the City of Plymouth far surpasses that of the surrounding area. While one and two family dwelling construction is strong, the Business, Commercial, Public and Industrial (all business related) sectors account for over 5.3 million of the City total of 8.2 million.(See Table 1)

For the year of 1997, construction permits values were 15.2 million in the City and almost five million in the two mile area. At the current rate, 1998 should surpass even the record setting pace of 1997. (See Table 2)

Solid growth in all sectors of construction (residential, commercial and industrial) bodes well for continued economic prosperity in the area. Coupled with the impressive growth in construction, Marshall County has seen a population increase of 7.5% for the period 1990-1997.

For comparative purposes listed below are the growth rates for neighboring counties:
St. Joseph 4.5
Kosciusko 7.8
Fulton 8.0
Starke 4.4
LaPorte 1.9
Elkhart 9.3
Miami 10.0
Pulaski 4.5

The future looks bright!
