Jim Wagner, President of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Public Affairs Manager for Sprint, is asking residents to prepare for the new area code coming to Plymouth and the north central Indiana area on January 15, 2002.

The Indiana Regulatory Commission has split the current 219 area code into three separate area codes. The new 574 area code has been assigned to residents in the north central part of the state. The northwest portion of Indiana, including LaPorte, Jasper and a portion of White County will keep the 219 area code while the northeast portion, including Whitley, Noble and LaGrange counties have been assigned the 260 area code.

The new area code will not have any effect on the cost of a call. "Local calls today will continue to be local calls after the new area code is in Place," said Wagner.

Permissive dialing begins January 15, 2002, and will allow callers to use either the 219 or new 574 area code when calling northeastern Indiana. However, beginning June 14, 2002, the new 574 area code must be used. At that time, if callers use the 219 area code, they will hear a recorded announcement reminding them to redial with the 574 area code.

"We urge our customers to plan for the change now. Begin notifying friends, relatives or business customers who must dial your area code. Remember to use your new number on checks, address labels, stationery or any other item which may include your telephone number, " Wagner said. "Performing these activities now will prevent last minute changes once the new area code becomes mandatory next June."
