Sprint Announces Rate Reductions

October of 1999 Sprint local telephone company in Indiana notified the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission that it wanted to place into effect a comprehensive regulatory plan that would include the reduction of consumer and access rates. The Commission approved Sprint's plan and will take effect February 1, 2000.

Some charges are being eliminated, such as touch tone service charge, and Residential Intrastate Subscriber Line Charge of $3.50.

There will be consolidation of 12 rate bands into three rate bands that will cause rate reductions for 95.5 percent of residential customers and 42 percent of single-line business customers. Depending on the type of service and the location, many Plymouth businesses will be seeing rate reductions from $1.44 to $11.13 per line.

In addition, all Sprint services will be designed as competitive or non-competitive and regulated accordingly. Presently, Sprint must undergo a 30-day tariff filing process to make rate changes. With this new plan in effect, Sprint will be able to change rates seven days after filing with the IURC, enhancing their ability to react to market conditions.
