Addie's Cold Weather Safety Pet Tips:
Ice melting chemicals and salt cause severe burning to the animal's footpads. Wash off your pet's footpads or check with your vet about products that can be applied before outdoor activities that may reduce the pain caused by road salt and chemicals.
If ingested, antifreeze is often lethal - even in small quantities. Dogs and cats like the sweet taste. This is a serious medical emergency and must be treated by a qualified veterinarian immediately!
If you must keep your dog outdoors, be aware of hypothermia. Shivering indicates a dangerous drop in body temperature. Metal choke collars, since steel attracts cold, will burn the animal's skin black. A leather or nylon flat buckle collar is much safer year-round.
