South Bend Silver Hawks

The Arizona Diamondbacks today announced the hiring of former major-league star Willie Wilson as hitting coach for their Class A Midwest League franchise, the South Bend Silver Hawks. Wilson played 19 seasons in the major leagues, primarily with the Kansas City Royals. He was an outstanding player in all areas of the game, leading the American League with 82 stolen bases in 1979, earning a Rawlings Gold Glove as an outfielder in 1980 and capturing the A.L.batting championship at .332 in 1982. Wilson came up with Kansas City in 1976 and remained with the Royals through the 1990 season. He then played two seasons in Oakland and two more for the Chicago Cubs before retiring after the 1994 campaign. He had a .285 career batting average and 668 stolen bases. He led the American League in triples three times, tied for the lead in two other seasons, and led the league in 1980 with 133 runs scored and 230 base hits. Wilson has been in private business since the 1997 season, when he was a coach for the Toronto Blue Jay's Class AAA affiliate in Syracuse. The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Midwest League. They play 140 games from April to September,including 70 home dates at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium. Opening Day 2001 is on Saturday, April 7th . The South Bend franchise has been in operation since 1988 and is a division of Palisades Baseball, Inc.

Plymouth Public Library

The Directors of the Plymouth Public Library have established a non-permanent special project fund in the Marshall County Community Foundation. This fund will be used for the renovation/building project for the Plymouth Public Library renovation of the old Pilot Building on Center Street. By opening this special project fund in the Marshall County Community Foundation, the library will be able to accept gifts for the project and provide the donor with a fully tax deductible contribution. Gifts of cash,stocks or other highly appreciated assets may be used as gifts. As the Marshall County Community Foundation is a 501C3 charitable institution donations will be fully tax deductible as allowed by the Internal Revenue Service. Donors wishing to contribute to the Library's Building Fund may do so by contacting the Marshall County Community Foundation by calling 935-5159 or the Plymouth Public Library 936-2324.

Swan Lake Restaurant located at Swan Lake Resort would like to welcome Jeremy Sampsel as their new Executive Chef. Jeremy is a graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School. In 1996 he was presented with an $8,000 scholarship for two years of study at Johnson & Wales University after being selected as first-runner up in their National Recipe Contest. After High School, Sampsel went on to attend culinary school at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina. While attending Johnson & Wales, Jeremy was one of 250 freshmen chosen to be a chef at the 1996 Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout his schooling Jeremy gained valuable work experience in the culinary field, including an internship at the Charleston Grille 5 Star Restaurant. Since completing his A.A.S. Culinary degree in 1998 from Johnson & Wales, Sampsel has resided in Denver, Colorado where he has worked at various businesses in the culinary industry.
