Ancilla College President Dr. Robert Abene is fulfilling his vision to expand programs at the school. With a target start date of fall 2004, the College will offer its own nursing program, starting with ADN - associate's degree in nursing. Ancilla College currently partners with Bethel College. Beginning the fall of 2004, Ancilla will begin enrolling nursing students in its own program. Ancilla currently offers all of the core courses that nursing students are required to take and who will now be able earn a degree in nursing right from Ancilla College. Kathy Norem of Knox, IN, will be the director of the new nursing program. Norem has vast experience in the nursing field. The majority of her professional nursing career was spent at Starke Memorial Hospital where she became CEO and eventually retired in May 2002. Her goal for Ancilla's nursing program is to establish a quality program that produces well-prepared nurses for the workforce. The associate's degree in nursing leading to an RN license will be the base of the new program. Students enrolled in the nursing program will have good clinical experience at various area hospitals that Ancilla will be partnering with, including Starke Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth. Norem, presently on campus getting set up, officially begins her position at the college on July 1. Students interested in the program can begin taking their other required courses now and then enroll in the Ancilla nursing program in 2004. With Ancilla's new state-of-the-art science and technology wing, expanding programs in health sciences is a natural for the College; nursing is just the beginning.

People's Drug Store
301 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth; 574-936-3167
The latest technology is taking People's Drug Store, the only independently owned and operated full service pharmacy in Plymouth, back to the good old corner drug store days, when pharmacists had time for personalized service and counseling. Starting July 31, '03, People's Drug Store will begin using the SP200 Robotic Prescription Dispensing System from ScriptPro. The SP200 has many safety features that ensure accurate medication dispensing. The SP200 performs the time consuming and tedious tasks of counting pills, filling vials and labeling prescriptions, using advanced robotics and automation. With ScriptPro automation, pharmacists have more time to answer questions and counsel their customers. How does the robot work? Once a prescription is entered into a pharmacy computer system, the robotic arm of the SP200 determines the correct size vial, and finds the specified drug. Using bar code scanning, it verifies the location of the drug. The robotic arm holds the vial and counts the pills as they are automatically dropped into the vial; then places the vial on a short conveyer belt and the patient label is applied, complete with medication warning labels and tablet/capsule identification. Bar code scanning is used throughout the system to assure that the correct drug is given to the patient. The pharmacist makes the final check for accuracy, comparing the pills in the vial with the computer screen image of the drug. People's Drug Store will not be losing any employees. Since the system can fill up to 100 prescriptions per hour, People's staff will be able to be more efficient in getting customers medications even at peak times. Please feel free to come in and observe the robot when it is installed.

1305 W. Harrison St., Plymouth 574-936-6043 Ruth Doyle, coordinator of Child Care of Marshall County, is pleased to announce a partnership with Ancilla College to raise the bar on the quality of child care in Marshall and surrounding counties. Twelve child care provider seminars took place between November 2002 and May 2003. A total of 180 providers have attended the seminars with topics ranging from CPR and First Aid to Nips, Nibbles and Downright Bites. During the past six months, four additional providers became licensed with the State of Indiana and five more are in the process of becoming licensed. Many thanks to Ancilla for providing incentives that encouraged providers to improve the quality of care they deliver to the children and families they serve. Doyle is also pleased to announce that Carey Weir, director of Carey's Child Care, has become the first childcare provider in Marshall County to become accredited by the National Association of Family Child Care.
There's a direct relationship to business and employees and child care needs. In today's highly competitive world, employees losing productivity due to childcare worries can be alleviated.
