Know Your Money - Counterfeit Currency Detection

Counterfeiting today accounts for billions in fraud loss to the economy and can be financially devastating to the retail merchant.

The counterfeiting of money is one of the oldest crimes in history. A national currency was adopted in 1862 to resolve the counterfeiting problem. However, the national currency was soon counterfeited and circulated so extensively that it became necessary to take enforcement measures. Therefore, on July 5, 1865, the United States Secret Service was established to suppress the wide-spread counterfeiting of this nation's currency. Although the counterfeiting of money was substantially suppressed after the establishment of the Secret Service, this crime still represents a potential danger to the Nation's economy.

Today, counterfeiting once again is on the rise. One reason for this is the ease and speed with which large quantities of counterfeit currency can be produced using modern computer and printing equipment. Today's desktop publishing allows counterfeiters the ease to produce the currency and quickly pass it to you, the retail merchant.

The Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce, Marshall County Sheriff's Department and the United States Secret Service will present "Know your Money." This informative seminar will be the perfect opportunity for Plymouth's Retail Merchants to "Ask the Experts." Come prepared to ask the Special Agents in charge of counterfeit investigations the best ways to protect yourself and your business and ways to assist local law enforcement with the investigation of counterfeit currency.

With information being power-you will leave this seminar with the power you need to protect your livelihood.

Some of the seminar highlights include:
  • History of U.S. Currency
  • Latest counterfeiting techniques
  • Counterfeit Detection methods
  • What steps to take when confronted with Counterfeit Currency
