Marshall County Humane Society
seeks to bring KIND News to Marshall County kids

Marshall County Humane Society is hoping that several local businesses
would like to join in helping Marshall County kids grow up to be kind, caring adults. As part of its Humane Education program, the Humane Society wants to provide all Marshall County first grade classes with a subscription to the KIND News newsletter, which is published monthly by the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education.

KIND (Kids In Nature's Defense) News is a colorful, four-page classroom newspaper read by more than one million elementary-school students nationwide. KIND News is highly praised by teachers and has received numerous awards for educational and editorial excellence. Through puzzles, projects, and fascinating articles, the newspaper teaches children the value of kindness toward people, animals, and the environment. Its emphasis on humane values such as fairness, compassion, and responsibility, seeks to encourage good character in children. Each month of the school year, September through May, teachers receive 32 copies of the newspaper. Three versions of the newsletter are published, for grade levels K-2, 3-4, and 5-6. A subscription to KIND News also includes a teacher's guide with every issue, and the annual resource book KIND Teacher. KIND Teacher contains reproducible worksheets, a colorful poster, and KIND ID cards for students. An annual subscription to KIND News and KIND Teacher is $30 per classroom.

Marshall County Humane Society would like to find local businesses and organizations that are willing to commit to funding a KIND News newsletter subscription for one or more Marshall County first grade classes on an ongoing basis. If enough sponsors volunteer, the newsletter could be provided to children in the higher grades also.

This would be an excellent and inexpensive way for businesses to demonstrate their concern for Marshall County kids. If you need more information on the program, or would be interested in sponsoring one or more classes, please contact Humane Society Executive Director Nancy Cox at 574-936-8300.
Heart and Hands
2003 Latino Festival
Chamber Member Opportunity

Heart and Hands, Inc. began serving the non-English speaking people of our community in June 2001. Now they have expanded these services to providing assistance with English classes, Spanish classes, and conversation classes. They provide translations and interpretations, referrals to area social services, a multitude of other cultural awareness classes and events. Last June, Heart and Hands brought to Marshall County the first Latino Festival with over 1,400 people in attendance, who came out, not only for a first time event, but also in 100º weather. This year this festival is expected to bring out even bigger crowds. Your Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce has sponsored an information booth. If any of our members have not signed up to participate in this year's Latino Festival and would like to at least have a presence there, you are very welcome to display product information pieces on the Chamber's table. Space is limited, so those wanting to share this space, call the Chamber NOW at 936-2323. The festival is on June 21, at the Centennial Park Amphitheater. When you call, further details will be shared.
