Shopping on the Web Soars During 1997
Small business owners hesitating about establishing a Web presence take note -- the number of PC users who visited Internet shopping sites went up more than 35 percent during the past year, according to Media Metrix, a demographics research company. And the Web site visitors aren't just window shopping either. Forrester Research found that credit card purchases over the Internet soared to $2.4 billion in 1997, double the 1996 total. American Express is even bullish on the Internet. They estimate $4 billion to $6 billion in credit card purchases over the Internet for 1997.
What are people buying via the Net? The Forrester Research study found PC hardware and software topped the list (no surprise there), but sales were also strong for books and music, flowers, and other gifts, travel tickets, and apparel.
