The South Bend Silver Hawks have announced a new Little League makeover plan. Leagues who book a group outing at The Cove of 200 people or more will get one of their fields rebuilt by Head Groundskeeper Joel Reinebold and his staff. For each additional 200 people, another field will be redone. Groups can attend any Silver Hawks regular season game, including opening day and fireworks nights. “This program is a great way for us to give back to the Michiana Little League and gain new fans among the kids who are already playing baseball,” said General Manager Christian Carlson. “We hope leagues will take advantage of this opportunity as we all prepare for opening day.” The Silver Hawks will rebuild the game mound and batters box area with packing clay supplied by the respective league. The Hawks will also edge the infield, re-drag and re-level the infield dirt area and remeasure the infield areas. All equipment and costs, except the packing clay, will be the responsibility of the Silver Hawks. Big Brothers Big Sisters is now planning the 2001 Bowl-For-Kids-Sake (BFKS) fundraising event for Saturday, March 24, 2001 and would like to make this year's event a success for the kids served in Marshall County. This is the largest single fundraising event of the year and is very important to the success for the programs to provide mentors for children. Providing adult mentors is important. National research has shown that kids in the BB/BS program are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to begin using alcohol. They are 52% less likely to skip a day of school and 32% less likely to skip classes. They demonstrate improved academic performance, are less likely to hit someone and report improved relationships with peers, parents, and teachers.
