PLYMOUTH
The Plymouth Chapter of Psi Iota Xi, Iota Nu has taken the Midwest Assistance Dogs, Inc. as their newest Indiana State Association project. Midwest Assistance Dogs, Inc. was founded in 1987 by the Theta Gamma Chapter of Psi Iota Xi. Midwest Assistance Dog's purpose is to provide qualified individuals with the means to better cope with their home and work environment and to give dogs that might other wise be humanely euthanatize, a home and the chance to live a useful life. Dogs are trained to assist humans with a variety of needs. Hearing Dogs can be trained to respond to sounds unique to their owner's environment and also any unusual sounds that may indicate danger or emergency. Service Dogs provide assistance to those with physical challenges, trained to retrieve, pull wheelchairs, operate light switches, assist their owners if they should fall and other specific tasks. All of these dogs become the ears and hands of those who need them. The cost of training the dogs is approximately $5000 each. This cost includes initial veterinary care, equipment, housing, placement expenses and the crucial training. After placement, the recipient is responsible for the care and maintenance of the dogs, but Midwest Assistance Dog Trainers continue to provide training assistance and answer any questions that may arise. Midwest Assistance Dogs, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose funding is raised through individual donations, service organizations, clubs, grants and fund raising programs and events. The Chapter's representative and a member of the Midwest Assistance Dogs, Inc. is Becky Berger. For more information about this program or to make a contribution, call Becky at 574-936-0636.
