preserving the standing reminders of our collective Marshall County past
Wythougan Valley Preservation Council, Marshall County's county-wide non-profit historic preservation organization, is marking a milestone this spring. 2004 marks the 5th Anniversary of the organization's founding and they would like to share their celebration with the community.
On May 6, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wythougan will play host to an open house held at the LaPorte Street Coffee House, 105 West LaPorte Street in Plymouth. Finger pastries will be served and guests may enjoy a specialty beverage as they review the accomplishments of the organization over its short five-year history. Walking tour brochures of the downtown and North & South Michigan Street will also be available.
Wythougan Valley Preservation Council began with a small group of individuals who placed Plymouth's Downtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Members of that group along with several others officially organized in April, 1999 to save the Garn House on Plymouth's south side, relocating the structure and restoring the one hundred year old home of the legendary Plymouth school teacher, Katherine Garn.
Since that time Wythougan has embarked on a number of other projects including the restoration of Summit Chapel-School, listing the Argos Downtown Historic District to the National Register, and making repairs to the Chief Menominee statue.
The Council is proud to represent all of the Marshall County community. The board is comprised of representatives from each township and the organization has assisted in or completed projects in most of the ten townships of the county. Please come celebrate with them and learn about their plans for the next five years. |
