Assisted Living - What You Need to Know
Article by B.J. DeCola
You may be ready to leave home ownership behind, but you certainly expect to feel "at home" in an assisted living apartment. Assisted living is an apartment-style accommodation for seniors who are no longer comfortable living independently or who may not want the responsibilities of home ownership any longer. Leave behind the work and upkeep of your home to enjoy maintenance free living. While still active and vital, residents may require help with some daily activities due to the process of aging. Assistance may help them stay that way. Assisted Living allows for and supports independence, privacy and respect. The whole idea is to live life to the fullest!

Assisted living facilities offer many choices and amenities to residents. It is important to compare these amenities when choosing a facility. Most offer restaurant style dining, recreational activities and entertainment, special events, holiday parties, safety and wellness checks, medication administration or medication reminders, cable or satellite television, personal laundry service, weekly housekeeping service, basic utilities, staff available 24 hours per day, scheduled transportation, short term respite stays, and emergency call systems. When visiting a facility, ask what services are provided.

Assisted living facilities may also have varying payment structures. Most offer one monthly fee with no lease to sign. Be sure to find out if the amenities and care provided are included in a flat fee or are part of tiered pricing. Generally, facilities are private pay only, though Veteran's benefits and long term care insurance policies may cover part of a resident's monthly expenses. Also, some facilities may accept Medicaid through a waiver program. In Indiana, assisted living facilities are not required to have a license with the state.

Assisted living is a popular alternative for seniors searching for companionship and assistance. Enjoy all the pleasures and privacy of residential living in a lovely apartment designed for your comfort. Everyone experiences the aging process differently. With assisted living, a helpful hand can offer peace of mind.
