Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County Just under a year ago, Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County became an official affiliate of the International Habitat for Humanity organization. Soon the Marshall County affiliate will be celebrating the completion of its first home and will begin construction of the second.
The formation of the local organization began in the fall of 1996. Ellen Boos, formerly with Love Inc., and Ginny Gibson felt that it was important to address the need of affordable housing in the county. Habitat provided the structure to meet those needs. The incorporation process took nearly two years to complete but has developed a strong group of individuals ready to accept some of the responsibility for affordable housing needs.
In December an anonymous benefactor offered to match dollar for dollar all monetary contributions made to the organization through May 1st, up to $20,000. Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County exceeded that goal, resulting in over $40,000 of funds to be used for building the second home. The selection process is underway for the second partner family and construction should begin in midsummer.
The house dedication for the first partner family in Marshall County will be held June 13th at 2:00 p.m. at the new home site located at 629 N. Fourth Street in Plymouth - all are invited to attend. Later that evening at 6:00 p.m. the second annual benefit "Concert for Humanity" will be held at the Plymouth Amphitheater with blues artists Duke Tumato and Southside Denny. Watch for announcements on ticket sales.
Habitat is looking forward to a long and constructive life in Marshall County. Financial donations and volunteers are always welcome. Volunteers truly make up the backbone of the organization. Interested individuals may write to Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County at Box 524, Plymouth, IN 46563 or call 219-936-3161 and ask for John Vialard, Board President.
