2004 United Way Campaign

From the Desk of John Chamberlin, Chairman

Every business and/or company in the Marshall County Community brags about being a "good community citizen." This year I am asking businesses and industry to support our local United Way Campaign by allowing the people from the United Way of Marshall County to come in and give a presentation to employees and participate in the payroll deduction program. This is the heart and soul of any successful United Way Campaign.
Employers need to give their employees a choice as to whether they wish to participate and give a couple of dollars from their weekly paycheck to the 2004 United Way Campaign. There is no easier way to show how much you care about the community than to allow your staff and employees to take part in this program. In one-way or another, directly or indirectly, the United Way of Marshall County has touched so many lives in each community throughout the county.

I am willing to bet if you ask at your work place you will find someone who has been helped by a United Way funded agency or program. In the Health Care Category, the United Way of Marshall County gave money to the Women's Care Center, Community Hospital of Bremen, Gift of Warmth, Cancer Association of Marshall County and the Beaman Home, a shelter for abused women and children.

There are sixteen ìcommunity partnersî that receive money from the United Way year after year. The Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Marshall Starke Development Center, Marshall County Council on Aging, Marshall County Neighborhood Center and the Salvation Army are just a few of the Member Agencies that receive funding each year. The United Way helps to fund senior groups in Bourbon, Bremen and Culver. Places like the Neighborhood Center and the Red Cross admit that it would be difficult if not impossible to keep their doors open without United Way funding.

We all know what can happen to some young people who have too much time on their hands or youth who have nothing to do outside of the school day. The local chapter of United Way provides key funding for the Marshall County Boys and Girls Club, Culver Community Youth Center, baseball, softball, football, soccer leagues, as well as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and DARE. Can you imagine a Marshall County without these programs? We've never had to face that here thanks in part to our local United Way.

Knowing all of this, how can you say no to letting the United Way of Marshall County come in for a few minutes in order to continue to serve all of the above. I will personally recognize every business and industry that becomes involved with payroll deduction and the employee participation program. Together we will exceed our goal this year of $500,000.00. A goal that is attainable, particularly when we compare ourselves with like counties in size across the state of Indiana. Currently, Marshall County ranks 11th out of 13 in per capita giving. We can do better, we must do better.

Remember,
it's Local, it's Efficient, it's Focused on Service, it's What Matters!

Call the United Way of Marshall County office to schedule a presentation time for your staff and employees at 574-936-3366.

The Memory Zone Scrapbook Store participates in a national scrapbook book club known as the NYOBC or Not Your Ordinary Book Club. Recently, The Memory Zone members were invited to participate in a "Best of the Book Club" layout contest. Three members, Denise Beckmann, Jarzelle McCollough, and Theresa Casad, of "Croppe-a-lotte Crew" (their chapters name) were selected to have their layouts in the idea book, scheduled for release sometime in September. In addition to the three members being featured in the idea book, both Jarzelle McCollough and Denise Beckmann were asked to be members of the Pine Cone Press Design Team, which means their names and layouts will be featured in other idea books to come by Pine Cone Press. The Memory Zone is very proud of all three of featured artists. If you know these individuals, be sure to congratulate them on a job well done. All are invited to stop in and see their layouts first hand on display.

PDAC has a high degree of energy, and the presence of the design team from Andrews University has added to it.

We have divided the committee into sub-committees to address the various segments of the “Action Plan” as described in the “Master Plan” created by the consultants, Business Districts, Inc (BDI) and Lehman & Lehman. These committees are busy short-term events and plans for the downtown as well as long-term comprehensive solutions to vacant buildings, streetscapes, zoning recommendations, affordable housing and other identifiable opportunities in Plymouth’s downtown TIF district.

Open meetings are held on alternate Thursdays
at 4:00 PM in the Laramore B room
at the Plymouth Public Library.

Watch for the Halloween parade and a fantastic Christmas “Tree Lighting” coming up!

Jupiter Quartet: Nelson Lee, violin; Meg Freivogel, violin; Liz Freivogel, viola; Daniel McDonough, cello
Formed in Cleveland in 2001, the Boston-based Jupiter Quartet has performed across the United States and abroad. Their interpretations have received warm reviews at a number of respected chamber music series, including the Tri-County Emerging Artists Concerts, Honest Brook Music Festival, Caramoor Festival and the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. They have played on some of the world's most spectacular chamber music halls, such as London's Wigmore Hall and Boston's Jordan hall. The Jupiter Quartet just made their New York debut in Weill Hall and received a glowing review from the New York Sun.

In 2004, the Jupiter Quartet won grand prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. This award includes Concert tours of the U.S., and engagements in Italy for 2005. In 2003, the quartet also won second prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Next year, they will enter the New England Conservatory as the school's fellowship quartet working primarily with Paul and Martha Katz. The Jupiter Quartet has had the good fortune to work closely with some of the most inspiring minds of the chamber music world. In particular, their work with Henry Meyer, former violinist of the renowned LaSalle Quartet, led to an invitation to perform on a series of concerts in Frankfurt, Weikersheim, and Aub, Germany.

The Jupiter Quartet has strong commitment to community outreach and the development of future classical music audiences. They have performed in children't concerts throughout the Boston area and in Vermont. The quartet's members hold degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatiory, Yale University and the New England Conservatory.
