United Way of Marshall County "Cares Close to Home"

Here are the facts. United Way of Marshall County is proud to partner with 16 Member Agencies providing over 70 separate programs and services. Older Adult Services provides transportation, homemaker services, meals on wheels and other services for the elderly of Marshall County. Boy Scout programs in Marshall County served over 810 youth in 2001 with 260 adult / client volunteers working together. The Boys and Girls Club of Marshall County has 432 active members. On a daily basis the club averages 116 plus members. Over 3000 persons benefited from United Way's support at the Community Hospital of Bremen. The partnership provides for childhood immunizations, pregnancy care and counseling, older adults and single parent services, prenatal classes, safe babysitting training and assuring the services of a paramedic level EMS. The cost of United Way is just 17 cents of every dollar contributed. Twelve cents is spent on administrative programs and five cents is spent on campaign. United Way is the most efficient and economical local charity.

These are just some of the facts that 2002 campaign chairman Sam Goebel wants the public to know. As stated in his campaign case, Sam believes that the United Way of Marshall County best exemplifies the American spirit of a free independent people pulling together to assist others for the betterment of the community. Sam Goebel, along with Vice-Chairman Greg Renz, has put together the largest campaign cabinet in the history of the local United Way. Thirty-seven campaign chairs and co-chairs covering every aspect of Marshall County business, from large industry to commercial, to education and professionals will begin this year's task of raising the county goal of $465,000.

"I'm excited to be the campaign chairman for 2002 and feel we have a great team of volunteers assembled. Our goal is very attainable yet challenging. I firmly believe that in times like these the theme "Caring Close to Home" is far more important than local funds leaving our community for other areas. If everyone would consider a fair share equaling one hours pay per month as their pledge, I am confident the needs of the United Way agencies could easily be met," stated Goebel.

This year's campaign theme "Caring Close to Home" ensures that the monies that the United Way volunteers will collect from the community to be allocated to the various agencies are not the funds of the United Way or of the benefiting agencies. The monies collected are the community's funds entrusted to the local United Way for equitable distribution. Essentially the United Way of Marshall County is a trustee for the community's funds with the responsibility of prudent allocation.

"I am excited," said Goebel, "that we were able to get Coach Paul Mainieri, Notre Dame's winning baseball coach as our Kickoff Speaker for this year's campaign." Goebel's kickoff luncheon will be held September 18, 2002 at the Occasion's Banquet Center in LaPaz, Indiana. Again the luncheon will be a gift to the community from Deb's Professional Caterers and Pat's Bar.

Although several companies are now engaged in Early Bird campaigns, the county campaign will be focused during the months of September and October.

If your business does not participate through payroll deduction in our local United Way Campaign, please consider doing so. This is a great year to get involved. The Indiana Association of United Ways has a matching program for new companies getting involved. Jumpstart 02 has many matching opportunities and you can increase your company's gift significantly. When a United Way volunteer comes calling, please say "yes" and show that you truly do Care Close to Home.
